Dr. Laura Bruns is originally from Aiken, South Carolina, and earned her Bachelor of Arts in Communication from the College of Charleston in 2008 and her Master of Science in Communication from Illinois State University in 2010. She completed her Ph.D. at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan, in 2022.
Her lifelong research interest in death and dying stems from a combination of personal curiosity, anxiety surrounding mortality, and a college seminar on death and dying that she found particularly fascinating. Her dissertation,听 Perimortem Rhetoric: A Rhetoric of Death and Dying, examined the ways people rhetorically discuss and navigate the concepts of death and dying. Her additional research interests include the rhetoric of magic, communication education, social movements, feminist rhetoric, rhetorical autoethnography, field rhetoric, and persuasion.
Dr. Bruns currently serves as the inaugural Chair of the Death and Dying Division, established in 2023 by the National Communication Association.
