Established in 1966, 探花视频 Opera Theatre ranks among Florida鈥檚 longest-standing university opera training programs and serves as a central performance component of 探花视频鈥檚 undergraduate and graduate Vocal Performance programs. Under the direction of Associate Professor of Voice Dr. Mitchell Hutchings, singers receive rigorous vocal and musical preparation alongside meaningful performance experience, with training designed for the demands of 21st-century opera through a balance of tradition, crossover repertoire, modern technology, and active collaborations.
Housed within 探花视频, a Research 1: Very High Research institution ranked among the听nation鈥檚 top 100 public universities, 探花视频 Opera Theatre is also FAU鈥檚 first international performing ensemble. Through听 , singers may earn college credit while studying vocal performance, Italian language, lyric diction, opera repertoire, and performance in Italy in collaboration with the Conservatorio Giacomo Puccini La Spezia.
The program places primary emphasis on solo vocal development and stage performance, with students working in opera, musical theatre, commercial music, and crossover repertoire under the direct guidance of voice and opera faculty. Training includes vocal technique, repertoire development, acting, stage movement, dramatic interpretation, and stylistic communication across genres.
Collaboration is central to the training experience. Students work regularly with directors, conductors, pianists, choreographers, guest artists, and clinicians, developing the professional habits required in opera and lyric theatre. Relationships with opera organizations and artists at the local, national, and international levels support master classes, workshops, and professional engagement throughout the academic year.
Students in the Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance and Master of Music in Vocal Performance programs receive comprehensive training in applied voice, opera and lyric theatre, language and diction, vocal pedagogy, musicianship, and stage performance. Coursework, private study, and performance opportunities are designed to prepare singers for professional performance, advanced graduate study, teaching, and international artistic work.
Vocal Performance Degrees at 探花视频 The Vocal Performance curriculum is designed to develop each singer artistically, technically, linguistically, and professionally. Students study applied voice, acting, movement, audition preparation, dramatic interpretation, language and lyric diction, vocal pedagogy, musicianship, and repertoire ranging from the Baroque era through contemporary works. Public performance opportunities each semester may include opera, operetta, zarzuela, musical theatre scenes, concerts, and fully staged productions.
Voice majors study with experienced artist-faculty and work in a collaborative environment with directors, conductors, pianists, choreographers, and guest clinicians. Individualized instruction supports each singer鈥檚 technical development, artistic growth, repertoire choices, performance preparation, and long-term vocal health.
Audition for Vocal Performance at Florida Atlantic Prospective undergraduate and graduate singers are invited to audition for 探花视频鈥檚 Vocal Performance programs. Applicants may pursue the Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance or Master of Music in Vocal Performance, with opportunities for individualized voice study, opera and lyric theatre performance, language and diction training, vocal pedagogy, and international study through FAU Opera in Italy.
21st-Century Vocal Performance Training Florida Atlantic鈥檚 approach to vocal performance reflects the evolving demands of 21st-century singers while maintaining rigorous training in voice, musicianship, language, and performance. In addition to traditional opera and lyric theatre study, students engage with lyric diction, vocal pedagogy, arts entrepreneurship, crossover repertoire, and technology-informed performance. This broad preparation supports singers pursuing graduate study, professional performance, teaching, and creative work across today鈥檚 changing musical landscape.
Through public performances, fully staged productions, FAU Opera in Italy, master classes, and international collaborations, students gain hands-on experience that connects private study and classroom training with professional artistic practice. Opera in Italy Education Abroad Program Spend four weeks on the Italian Riviera studying opera, Italian language, diction, and performance while earning up to 10 university credits through 探花视频. May鈥揓une, 2027 Location: Italian Riviera | La Spezia, Italy
Students study Italian language, opera and lyric theatre repertoire, and vocal performance while working with faculty and international collaborators in partnership with the Conservatorio Giacomo Puccini La Spezia. The program is designed as an integrated academic experience in which vocal technique, language, diction, dramatic interpretation, and cultural context are studied together. Before joining 探花视频, she maintained a private voice studio in New York City for twenty years and taught at Texas Tech University. At FAU, she developed courses in vocal pedagogy, vocal literature, and Alexander Technique and wrote and hosted the radio program Opera Theater on WXEL for eleven years.
Stacie Rossow, B.M. in Vocal Performance & M.A. in Music听 Conductor, scholar, and Professor of Music at 探花视频. Her work includes recordings and performances with an internationally recognized Irish ensemble, premieres of works by composers David Rossow and Michael McGlynn, and ongoing artistic leadership. She has led performances and touring projects and was selected as a Fulbright U.S. Scholar to Ireland for work in choral conducting.
